Now and Forever (1934)

Henry Hathaway, Shirley Temple, Gary Cooper - Now and Forever

Jerry Day, a criminal, and his partner Toni Carstairs, go their separate ways after a scam in Shanghai. Jerry returns to the United States, with plans to sell the custody of his daughter Penelope to his former brother-in-law, James Higginson. When he meets Penelope at the Higginson estate, Jerry decides to reclaim her instead. Jerry and Penelope then travel to Europe, where they reunite with Toni and try to make a home for Penelope. When Jerry's efforts to make an honest living selling real estate fail, he turns back to crime. At the urging of another criminal, Felix Evans, Jerry steals a necklace from a wealthy society matron, Mrs. J. H. P. Crane, who has become friendly with Penelope. After realizing that he has broken his promise to be honest with his daughter, Jerry fights with Evans to get the necklace back and returns it to Mrs. Crane. Jerry is injured in the altercation, and Mrs. Crane agrees to adopt Penelope. Jerry collapses from his wound and, upon waking up in the hospital, knows he will be punished, but Toni assures him that Penelope will understand.
