The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926)

Jefferson Worth discovers an orphaned child in the desert and decides to raise her as his own daughter, naming her Barbara (played by Vilma Banky). As she grows into a woman, she is loved by the ranch foreman, Abe Lee (Gary Cooper). However, when a wealthy land developer arrives with plans to irrigate the desert, Worth joins forces with him. The irrigation project is placed under the supervision of Willard Holmes (Ronald Coleman), an engineer from the East. He also falls in love with Barbara, leading to a rivalry between him and Abe for her affections. But when Abe Lee discovers that the financier, James Greenfield (E. J. Ratcliffe), plans to betray his partners and that the dam is about to burst, he runs to warn Holmes. Holmes is able to save the day just in time, but Abe Lee dies in Barbara's arms, having sacrificed his own life to save others.
