Jim Blandings (Cary Grant), an account executive in the advertising business, decides to build a house on the land, in order to spare his family the narrowness of their cramped New York apartment. This sets a chain of obstacles, misunderstandings and coincidences in motion that make the finished dream home appear as being a miracle.
