In Name Only (1939)

Julie Eden, a young widow, rents a summer cottage in Connecticut near the estate of Alec Walker. Alec falls in love with Julie and decides to seek a divorce from his wife Maida, who married him for his wealth and social status. Maida initially agrees to the divorce and travels to Paris to finalize the proceedings, but when she returns to New York, she reveals that she never intended to actually get a divorce. She threatens to sue Julie for alienation of affection if Alec goes through with the divorce. Disheartened, Julie and Alec leave Maida's suite, believing that they have little hope for happiness together. Later that night, Alec becomes seriously ill with pneumonia. Outside the hospital room, Maida confesses to Julie that she is only interested in Alec's money and the inheritance that he will someday receive from his father. Alec's parents, who have been listening outside the door, finally understand Maida's true nature. With this revelation, Alec and Julie are now free to marry.
