Twin sons are born to the king of France - one destined to sit on the throne, the other to be relegated to oblivion. Twenty years after, one twin, now King Louis XIV, is engaged to marry Maria Theresa, the Infanta of Spain, an alliance designed to prevent war breaking out in Europe.
