Slide, Kelly, Slide (1927)

Although the subject of baseball usually spelled poison at the box office, this film proved just the opposite and became a smash hit. It was one of Haines' best efforts, in which he plays a bush-league pitcher who joins the New York Yankees, becomes a sensation, but then develops a swelled head and quits the team during the World Series after an argument with his manager. When little Coughlan, the team mascot, is brought to the ballpark in a wheel chair after an accident, Haines comes through just in time to win the game. Later, after accepting the forgiveness of his teammates, Haines claims the love of O'Neill, his manager's daughter.
