Bill Blake (Johnny Depp), a mild-mannered accountant from Ohio, undergoes a radical transformation and becomes a notorious gunman. He leaves his job in Cleveland to go to the Wild West, only to find that the job he was planning to take has already been filled. He quickly finds himself in conflict with a rude factory owner named Dickinson (Robert Mitchum), and ends up killing for the first time when Dickinson's son shoots Blake's lover after discovering them in bed together. Blake goes on the run, pursued by three bounty hunters led by the cruel man in black, Cole Wilson (Lance Henriksen), as well as other people trying to track him down.
