At the end of the thirteenth century, with succession to the Scottish throne in dispute, Edward I of England lays feudal claim to the Scottish crown and lands. Scottish patriots rally around William Wallace against the English king, whose forces he defeats without the aid of the Scottish nobility. When Wallace marches south into England, Edward sends his daughter-in-law Isabelle to negotiate a truce. 1
