After being apprehended by the police, Miles Bennell, a respected doctor, tells a remarkable story to a psychiatrist. He had returned to his hometown of Santa Mira, California, to find that many of his long-time patients had become convinced that their relatives and friends were imposters. His former flame, Becky, also experiences this strange phenomenon. Initially, Miles dismisses their stories as a case of mass hysteria. However, when his best friend Jack urgently calls for help, Miles discovers a large seedpod in Jack's basement. Inside the pod, a duplicate of Jack is in the process of forming. Miles and Becky go on the run, now aware that almost everyone in the town has been taken over by these emotionless duplicates.
