The movie opens with a brutal police interrogation of 17-year-old Francis Andrews (Sir Richard Attenborough), triggering a series of flashbacks that explain how he ended up in this situation. Andrews had betrayed the crew of a smuggling ship, who were also his guardians, led by Richard Carlyon (Sir Michael Redgrave). Some members of the crew were caught, but Carlyon managed to escape and went on a search for Andrews. Despite knowing Andrews as a coward, Carlyon had a fondness for him. Seeking refuge, Andrews turned to Elizabeth (Joan Greenwood), who encouraged him to testify against the smugglers in court. He mustered the courage to do so, causing Carlyon to recognize his bravery and forgo revenge. Carlyon was eventually caught, but despite police torture, Andrews did not reveal his identity, leading to Carlyon's release and his guardian's execution.
