Made for Each Other (1939)

James Stewart, Carole Lombard - Made for Each Other

John Mason, an attorney, and his wife Jane were planning to go on a honeymoon cruise to Europe on a trans-atlantic liner. However, their plans were interrupted when Mason was called back to work by his boss, Judge Doolittle, to try an important case. This marks the beginning of a series of disappointments for the newlyweds.

The Masons host a dinner party for the Judge, his daughter Eunice, and her husband Carter, which turns out to be both humorous and tragic. As they are served the last course, melted ice cream, Judge Doolittle announces that Carter has been made a partner in the firm.

The Masons' lives become increasingly difficult as unpaid bills pile up, Mason's mother, who is prone to finding fault, moves in with them in their small apartment, and their baby becomes seriously ill on New Year's Eve.

It is only when the Mason baby is on the verge of death that Judge Doolittle seems to recognize the value of John as an attorney. He arranges for the baby's medicine to be delivered to New York by plane, even though it means flying through a snowstorm. The infant's life is saved, and John becomes a partner in the firm as a result of his success.
