A group of wealthy men are recruited by Kay Everly to play a game of poker with a dishonest gambler named Babe Stewart. Detective Collins is closely monitoring Stewart, but lacks the evidence to make an arrest. As Stewart begins to suspect that Collins is closing in on him, he decides to leave town and chooses the small town of Glendale, near New York, as a place to hide. There, he meets Connie Randall, the local librarian, and they impulsively get married. When Stewart returns to New York, he resumes hosting dishonest poker games, and Connie eventually learns the truth about her husband's profession. Kay Everly returns from the Caribbean and threatens to go to the District Attorney, but Stewart, who has fallen in love with Connie, decides to turn himself in. He is sentenced to three months in jail, during which he tries to make Connie believe that he is in South America for business. After his release, Stewart and Connie are reunited.
