A World Apart (1988)

Jeroen Krabbé, Jodhi May - A World Apart

Molly Roth, a 13-year-old girl and the oldest of three children of Gus and Diana Roth, lives a privileged life as part of South Africa's wealthy white minority. Race doesn't affect her as she feels comfortable around both white and black people, including her parents' black friends and servants. However, Molly is unaware of her parents' activism, with Gus being a top member of the South African Communist Party and Diana being an anti-apartheid journalist who secretly works for the banned African National Congress. After Gus leaves the country to avoid arrest, Molly's life changes when Diana is arrested for 90 days under a new law that allows detention without charges. Inspector Muller interrogates Diana to reveal details about the underground, especially "names." Molly misses her mother and resents her anti-apartheid activism, which has negatively affected her life. As she takes care of her younger sisters and learns more about life outside her privileged white community, Molly gains a deeper understanding of apartheid and her mother's activism.
