Libeled Lady (1936)

Newspaper editor Haggerty leaves his fiancé, Gladys, at the altar to investigate the reason behind his paper's publication of a scandalous story about millionaire Connie. Mr. Bane, the owner of the newspaper, has been slapped with a $5,000,000 libel lawsuit because of the story. Haggerty searches the world over for expert lawyer Bill Chandler and finds him on his own doorstep, and marries him to the startled Gladys. Chandler travels to Europe and ingratiates himself with Connie and her father. He discovers a compromising situation that will force withdrawal of the lawsuit, but he falls in love with Connie and they elope. Being a clever lawyer, Chandler proves that his marriage to Gladys wasn't legal. Connie agrees to drop the lawsuit. With the problems resolved, Haggerty marries Gladys.
