John Carteret has been suffering from depression and loneliness for years, ever since his bride Moonyean was murdered on their wedding day. He takes in Moonyean's five-year-old orphaned niece Kathleen and raises her, who grows up to resemble her aunt. Kathleen falls in love with a mysterious man from America named Kenneth Wayne. John becomes angry upon hearing this news, as it was Kenneth's father Jeremy who killed Moonyean. Despite his grudge against Jeremy being passed down to the next generation, John eventually relents and allows Kathleen to find happiness with Kenneth.
