The Actress (1953)

Ruth Gordon Jones, a 17-year-old, aspires to become an actress. Her father, Clinton Jones, who used to be a seafaring man, now works a low-paying job that he dislikes. Despite being rejected by a well-known Boston theater manager, Ruth convinces her parents to support her dream. She also chooses to end her relationship with her suitor, Fred Whitmarsh. Her father quits his job after standing up to his boss, but is confident he will find new employment. Ruth then leaves for New York City to pursue her career, and her father gives her a valuable seaman's spyglass to sell for her expenses.
