The Seventh Cross (1944)

The story takes place in Nazi Germany in 1936. Seven men escape from a concentration camp. The camp commander sets up seven crosses. The Gestapo hunts down the escapees and as each one is captured, he is put to death on one of the crosses. Six are caught and killed. However, George Heisler is aided by others and eventually escapes to Holland and freedom. Initially embittered and without hope or trust in humanity upon his escape from the camp, George regains faith when others, including a former love, risk their lives to assist him. The seventh cross remains unoccupied.
