Tortilla Flat (1942)

The story takes place in a small fishing village where money is scarce and employment is a last resort. Danny inherits two houses and courts Dolores. His friend Pilon moves in with several of his friends. Pilon initially plans to steal money from a man named Pirate, but changes his mind when he learns the money is being saved to buy a candlestick for St. Francis. Pilon is also attracted to Dolores, but when one of Danny's houses burns down and Danny is injured in a fight, Pilon uses his efforts to bring Danny and Dolores closer. He even goes to work to help Danny acquire a boat. Eventually, Danny recovers and wins Dolores.
