Les opprimés (1923)

Concepcion de la Playa Setta, a noblewoman from Andalusia and the daughter of the provost marshal of Flanders, falls in love with the Duke Philippe de Hornes, a Brussels gentleman who is leading a revolt against the Spanish occupiers. During an uprising against Philip II's troops, de Hornes is injured and Concepcion takes him in to her house, where she personally defends him at his trial. Despite being condemned to hang, the intervention of the Duke of Alba leads to de Hornes being reprieved by the new governor and released. The two lovers are eventually reunited and can now live happily together.
