Captains Courageous (1937)

Harvey Cheyne is the spoiled and yet neglected son of a wealthy businessman. He believes he can succeed in life by lying, cheating, and crying. He is expelled from school and travels to Europe with his father. Harvey falls off the liner as it passes the Grand Banks and is rescued by a fishing boat. Although most of the crew finds the boy too entitled, Manuel, a Portuguese fisherman, takes care of him, and the boy gradually responds to the kindness he has never experienced before. During a competition with another ship, Manuel falls into the sea and is killed. Harvey is devastated. The boat returns to Gloucester, and Harvey is reunited with his father. Having learned some important lessons, Harvey lights a candle in memory of Manuel.
