A Lady Takes a Chance (1943)

Jean Arthur - A Lady Takes a Chance

Mollie Truesdale (Jean Arthur), a New York bank clerk, sets off on a bus tour of the West. Three envious men observe her departure at the bus station. The journey lacks excitement until the bus stops in Fairfield, Oregon and Mollie attends a rodeo, where she meets Duke Hudkins (John Wayne), who falls off his horse and lands in her lap. The evening with Duke involves drinking, gambling, and a fight, causing Mollie to miss her bus. Duke offers her a place to stay, making his companion Waco (Charles Winninger) sleep outside. Mollie joins Duke and Waco on their travels to catch up with her bus. During a camping trip in the desert, Mollie takes a blanket from Duke's horse, Sammy, and sees Duke's care for the horse. She tries to win Duke over by cooking dinner for him, but he leaves after realizing he's wearing an apron. On the way back on the bus, Mollie is approached by the same three men, but Duke intervenes, sending them away and escorting Mollie back to the bus. This time, her return trip to the West will be different.
