Charlotte (1980)
In 1939, Charlotte Salomon fled Berlin and found refuge at her grandparents' villa in southern France. Soon after, the outbreak of war forced her to confront her grandmother's depression and her mother's suicide, in addition to the memories of her past life. To combat her sadness, Charlotte began to paint, creating over a thousand pictures. She named her collection "Is my life real, or is it theater?" reflecting on her experiences in Berlin. Through her art, she discovered herself, but in 1943 she was deported to Auschwitz in Germany.
