Rudolf, the Crown Prince of Austria, feels constrained in all aspects of his life. He is unfulfilled and feels oppressed by his father, the emperor, whose views are more conservative than his own. Despite this, he agrees to marry a princess in order to produce an heir. In his free time, he leads a playboy lifestyle. In 1888, he meets Marie Vetsera, a 17-year-old baroness's daughter. She is determined, infatuated with him, and does not want anything in return for her love. The Prime Minister is concerned and arranges for her to be sent away.
