Man braucht kein Geld (1932)

The Brandt family has lost their fortune in oil speculation and are heavily in debt to the local bank, which is also at risk of collapse. Their only hope is the visit of Thomas Hoffman, an American millionaire uncle of the Brandts. In an effort to impress Hoffman, bank accountant Schmidt uses his own money to present himself as the fiancé of Brandt's daughter. However, it is revealed that Hoffman is not a millionaire and actually owes the city of Chicago $100 for medical treatment. Nevertheless, his presence inspires a scheme to restore the family's prosperity. Despite initial success, complications arise as Chicago demands repayment of the debt and Hoffman is unhappy with the scheme and wants to return to his quiet life in Chicago.
