Countess Maria, a renowned stage performer, is threatened by her former lover, a frivolous stage poet, to publish their old love letters. To retrieve the letters, Maria visits her ex-lover's house, only to find herself amidst a wild bacchanal that causes her reputation to suffer. Her husband Count Tamar, embarrassed by the scandal, divorces her and takes custody of their child, leaving Maria alone and ostracized from the theater world. With no job and nowhere to turn, Maria becomes physically and mentally broken, and her life takes a tragic turn. Despite her efforts to locate her child, she dies without ever seeing her again, leaving behind a shattered legacy.
