Gambler Steve Wiley's scheme to win a new car in a lottery by using forged tickets goes wrong and he is forced to share the prize with genuine winner Malcolm Smith, an avid movie fan who wants to drive from New York to Hollywood to meet his film star idol Anita Ekberg.
