1750: deep in the South American jungle, Father Gabriel, a Jesuit priest, establishes the outpost mission of San Carlos among the hostile Guarani Indians. But these remote natives are also a valuable source of slaves for the governing Spanish and Portuguese, and soon Father Gabriel finds that his own life is in great danger.
