Helke Sander's documentary chronicles the experiences of German women raped by Soviet soldiers in Berlin in May 1945. Sander interviews survivors and documents the physical and emotional consequences of their rapes, including pregnancies, abortions, and stigmatization. She also interviews soldiers who admit to committing rape during the war. Using archival footage, re-enactment, personal testimony, and voice over commentary, Sander's politically motivated film brings attention to the issue of wartime rape, and convinced the UN to classify it as a war crime.
