Kay, residing in a monotonous small town, feels her life is unbearable. One evening, she encounters Bob Dakin, a wealthy and attractive young man who asks for directions while drunk and takes her out. Kay is drawn to the stranger, and when he drunkenly proposes marriage, she agrees. The next day, Bob regrets the proposal but his conservative parents insist they maintain a facade of marriage for six months before divorcing to avoid negative publicity. Bob is frustrated with Kay for hindering his relationship with his intended, Priscilla, but Kay still holds out hope for a change of heart from Bob.
