By the mid-twenty-second century, humans have expanded their territory into space to exploit mineral resources, often at the expense of indigenous populations. Pandora, a forest-covered moon in the Alpha Centauri system, contains unobtanium, a powerful energy source that is being mined by astronaut entrepreneurs representing corporate interests. This mining destroys the ecological system and threatens the genocide of the local Na'vi people. Initially excited to be a part of this conquest, paraplegic Jake Sully begins to question imperialistic attitudes when he becomes isolated in a green garden. There, he falls in love with the beautiful humanoid Neytiri and comes to share her people's simple and pure values.
