Janine, a French ballet dancer and skilled tap-dancer, aspires to have a musical career in Paris. But before that, she wants to take revenge on Count René who broke the heart of her best friend, Charlotte. Janine plans to make him fall in love with her and then reject him. They meet at a masked ball where Janine is pretending to be a Marquise. Initially, she is disappointed in Count René, but she does not realize that he too is pretending to be someone else. The man she believes to be Count René is actually Pierre, a composer and pianist. Both Count René and Pierre are using their disguise to their advantage. René wants to flirt and make conquests anonymously, while Pierre hopes to meet with a powerful music publisher, Pamion.
