Sam Flynn, the CEO and primary shareholder of ENCOM International, is financially secure due to his father's creation of the software giant. However, he is not motivated by money, but rather by the potential scientific, spiritual, intellectual, and creative benefits for humanity in the "Grid," an alternate universe. Sam is puzzled by his father's disappearance and promises to share the Grid with him, but discovers from a trusted friend that his father is actually living inside the game. Like his father, Sam decides to embark on the journey into this inner universe.
