Sir Ronald Burton, a fearless 18th century adventurer, suspects that his two friends were murdered by Count von Bruno on his estate in the Black Forest. Determined to gather evidence, Burton travels to the castle and discovers that von Bruno's wife, Elga, and the castle physician, Dr. Meissen, are being held as prisoners. As Burton investigates, he realizes that Von Bruno has a vendetta against him as he was responsible for capturing and torturing the count and his henchman, Gargon, for ivory poaching in Africa.
Von Bruno plots to have Burton killed in a leopard hunt, but he manages to escape. However, he returns when he finds out that the count plans to kill Elga for falling in love with him. In a desperate attempt to save her, Burton fights Gargon and pushes him into an alligator pit, killing him. As Burton and Elga are captured and imprisoned, von Bruno plans to bury them alive. But, with the help of Dr. Meissen, they are able to fake their deaths and escape. But von Bruno, who is aware of their plan, kills the doctor. In the final showdown, Burton is able to defeat von Bruno and save Elga, as Dr. Meissen had placed dueling pistols in his hands.
