The Kiss (1929)

Irene Guarry (Greta Garbo) is the wife of a silk merchant in Lyon. Her husband's partner, Lassalle (Holmes Herbert), has a son, Pierre (Lew Ayres), who is in love with Irene. Irene resists Pierre's advances, but her husband (Anders Randolf) becomes jealous and tries to kill Pierre. To save Pierre, Irene kills her husband with his own gun. Lassalle makes Pierre keep the matter a secret. Irene is put on trial and Andre (Conrad Nagel), a lawyer and her former lover, defends her. Lassalle claims that Guarry was depressed over business. Irene is cleared of the charge. She leaves with Andre, but she must reveal to him the true circumstances surrounding her husband's death.

Sweden's gift, Greta Garbo, makes silent pictures and you like them or else. But you like them. "The Kiss" is a stereotyped triangle yarn, but it is distinguished by another compelling performance by the mysterious Garbo. The story involves the loves of three men for a woman. The husband is shot and the wife goes on trial for her life. Conrad Nagel is the "honorable" lover.
