As Krypton faces destruction, its citizens overthrow their ruling council and put General Zod in charge. Knowing the end is near, Jor-El encodes the genetics of his race into his son, Kal-El, and sends him into space. Zod and his followers are banished to the Phantom Zone, but after Krypton's destruction they search the solar system for the sole survivor, Kal-El. He is found by a Kansas couple, the Kents, who raise him as their own. Jonathan Kent believes that it is best for Clark to keep his powers secret, even if it means allowing innocent people to come to harm, in order to protect his identity, which was a new take on the classic story that received mixed reactions from fans of the franchise.
