Let's Get a Divorce (1918)

Billie Burke - Let's Get a Divorce

The Sardou play opens with a young woman who is married to a man almost forty years old. Although her husband is kind to her, he is absorbed in his work, leaving her unfulfilled in her desire for romantic love and thrilling adventures. She decides that the only solution is to divorce her husband and seeks the help of her husband's cousin, Adhemar, who is eager to have an affair with a married woman but cannot afford to marry her.

To appease his wife's wishes, the husband conspires with some friends to make it seem like he is granting her a divorce, even inviting Adhemar to their home and settling a large sum of money on his wife. However, as the affair loses its appeal, the young wife begins to realize her husband's magnanimity and begins to regret her decision.

She becomes distressed when she suspects her husband of having an affair with another woman and urges him to break his dinner engagement to spend time with her and Adhemar instead. When Adhemar learns of her infidelity, he goes to the restaurant where she is dining with her husband and is outraged when he discovers that they are alone in a private room. He seeks the protection of the police as a safeguard for his future marital rights.

The situation becomes increasingly ludicrous, but it ultimately leads to the young wife regaining her sanity and reconciling with her husband.
