Hoodoo Ann (1916)

Mae Marsh, Elmo Lincoln, Robert Harron - Hoodoo Ann

Hoodoo Ann, as she is known, has faced a string of misfortunes throughout her young life. When she is left at Meadowdale orphanage on the 13th of the month, her troubles seem to increase. While other children have toys to play with, Ann is stuck with scrubbing and cleaning.

One fateful night, the orphanage catches fire, and Ann saves the life of Little Goldie, the pet of Miss Prudence Scraggs. The childless Knapps adopt Ann, and she becomes close friends with young Jimmie Vance, who is studying art. However, things take a turn when Ann finds Mr. Knapp's revolver and accidentally discharges it while playing in the attic.

The gunshot leads Ann to the house next door, where the quarrelsome couple, Bill and Sarah Higgins, live. Sarah has just left the house after an argument when Ann rushes in to see if her shot has caused any harm. She finds Bill lying on the floor and believes she has killed him. When Sarah returns, she is falsely accused of the murder and is arrested.

Ann is about to confess to the accidental shooting when Bill appears unharmed. It turns out that the bullet had only maimed a stray cat. Jimmie and Ann nurse the cat back to health, and Ann realizes her calling as a nurse and homemaker.

She becomes known as Sunshine Ann and eventually marries Jimmie Vance, with the name sticking even after she becomes Mrs. Vance.
