The six-year-old girl Hushpuppy lives with her father Wink in a forgotten bayou cummunity, called the Bathtub, cut off from civilisation by a levee. A huricane submerges the Bathtub, and the villagers find their home flooded. To stop the flooding Wink destroys the levee. This act attracts the attention of the government who forcibly relocate the residents of the Bathtub. The villagers escape from the relief centre and return to their sodden homes. After a quarrel, Hushpuppy leaves to search for her mother. After a journey where she meets a mother substitute she returns home just in time to see her father die.
