Pi Patel lives in India, where his father is the keeper of the local zoo. Planning to start a new life, the family leaves India, to go to Canada to sell the animals there. Their ship founders in a storm and Pi is left on a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a tiger named 'Richard Parker'. Soon the tiger is the only animal left. Pi tames the tiger and together they face the elements, finally arriving in Mexico.
