After serving in the US navy in the Second World War, veteran Freddie Quell returns to America. After losing several jobs, he stows away on a yacht, to find out it is owned by Lancaster Dodd, founder of the human-potential movement called 'The Cause'. Dodd becomes a disciple of Dodd and his movement.
