Jean Valjean is imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. After he breaks parole he is perpetually hunted by police inspector Javert. When he agrees to take care of the illegitimate daughter of the tragic factory worker Fantine, he finds a reason to keep his freedom changing their lives forever.
