The plot centers around a group of misfits living in Nevada who are struggling to find their place in the world. Gable plays a rodeo cowboy named Gay Langland who is struggling to come to terms with his own mortality, while Monroe plays a depressed and disillusioned divorcee named Roslyn Tabor. Clift plays a mechanic named Perce Howland who is struggling to find his place in the world.

The film follows these characters as they come together and try to make sense of their lives in the face of overwhelming challenges and difficult choices. As they confront the realities of their own mortality and the changing world around them, they must decide whether to continue fighting for their dreams or to accept their fate as misfits.
