The Case of Lena Smith (1929)





In late 19th century Vienna, Lena Smith, a naive peasant girl from Hungary, gets pregnant from a corrupt young cavalry officer and goes to work as a servant in his house, keeping the truth hidden from his unsympathetic father. The son continues with his wild lifestyle. She loses her child first as a baby and later when they are separated by the war. To protect the child, she endures imprisonment, contempt, and shame.
