Elmer, a cheerful petty thief who's not getting any younger, is caught breaking into a car by the owner, a stiff-lipped man called Reg. In exchange for his freedom, Elmer goes to work for Reg, doing odd jobs to compensate for the damage. Amanda, Reg's six-year-old daughter, and Elmer take an immediate liking to each other.
