Mata Hari is a German spy posing as a dancer in Paris during World War I. She is tasked with obtaining Russian military information for the Allies and meets Lt. Alexis Rosanoff, with whom she has an affair. She discovers that Rosanoff has the information she needs, and spends the night with him while her fellow agents copy the messages. However, her lover, General Shubin, learns of her relationship with Rosanoff and threatens to turn her in as a spy. In an effort to protect herself and Rosanoff, Mata Hari shoots Shubin. Rosanoff returns to Russia, but is shot down and becomes blinded. When he is brought to a hospital, Mata Hari visits him and confesses her love. She is later arrested and brought to trial, but rather than expose Rosanoff to the truth about her past, she pleads guilty and is taken from her cell to be executed by a firing squad.
