After a telephone argument with her husband Alex, Erica Boyer is knocked down by a taxi and hospitalised with a broken hip. Alex nearly manages to pick up Susan McCall, a girl he meets at an astronomy lecture, but she rejects him when he is forced to reveal that he is married to a temporary invalid. When Erica discharges herself from hospital, Lisa Willoughby, a young nurse, arrives to help her with her physiotherapy. Lisa doesn't quite hit it off with Erica but seems to get on very well with Alex.
