Laura, raised in a low-income family, chooses not to wed the neighborhood boy and instead moves in with wealthy older man, Will Brockton. She falls for Jack Madison, an ambitious young journalist, and leaves Brockton to await Madison's return from a lengthy assignment. Struggling financially, she goes back to Brockton.
