Call of the Flesh (1930)

Juan de Dios is a performer from a humble background who sings and dances at a cantina in Seville with his partner Lola. Despite their close working relationship, their personal relationship is strained due to Lola's jealousy over Juan's flirtatious nature. Juan has a passion for serious opera singing and is being mentored by Estaban, a former impresario who is trying to steer Juan away from his own reckless behavior that led to his downfall. Estaban plans to launch Juan's career by getting an old contact in Madrid, an impresario, to manage him and secure major singing gigs. Juan meets Maria Consuelo Vargas and they are instantly smitten. What Juan doesn't know is that their meeting was not by chance; Maria, who had just escaped from her life as a postulant at St. Agustín convent, was fascinated by Juan's singing and had watched him from the convent wall. Juan offers to take Maria in when she tells him she has no home. When he finds out she was a former nun, he must decide whether to marry her or try to send her back to the convent. This decision is complicated by Maria's brother, Army Captain Enrique Vargas, who believes she is meant for a life in the church, Lola's jealousy, and Juan and Estaban's aspirations for his singing career.
