The Flame and the Arrow

In medieval Lombardy, Dardo's wife leaves him to become the mistress of Ulrich, commander of the Hessian mercenaries who occupy the region. When his wife attempts to kidnap their son, Dardo fights back, killing several Hessians and sustaining a serious wound himself. After he recovers, he kidnaps Ulrich's niece Anne, who soon falls in love with him. Captured by Ulrich's men, Dardo is sentenced to be hanged, and he only escapes death by wearing a special harness that prevents his being strangled by the hangman's noose. He escapes and joins forces with a group of acrobats who storm Ulrich's castle and drive the Hessians from Lombardy. 1
