On what appears to be a normal day, the members of U.S. National Science Institute Station #4 in Antarctica start their daily tasks. Suddenly, a malamute dog runs into their base, being chased by a helicopter full of Norwegians who shoot at the dog. The Norwegians are accidentally killed and the American crew takes in the dog. As time goes on, MacReady, a natural leader, realizes that the Norwegians had discovered a UFO with an alien on board. The alien can merge with any living being and take on its identity, including the dog, which may not be as friendly as it seems.
